Howard Baskerville (April 10, 1885 – April 19, 1909): American-Iranian Heroقهرمان ایرانی آمریکایی انقلاب مشروطه ایران
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS
Howard Baskerville (April 10, 1885 – April 19, 1909) was an American teacher in the Presbyterian mission school in Tabriz, Iran. He is often referred to as the "American Lafayette in Iran". In 1908, during the Constitutional Revolution of Iran, he decided to join the Constitutionalists under Sattar Khan, the national hero, and fight against the Qajar despot King Mohammad Ali Shah. He was shot while leading a group of student soldiers to break the Siege of Tabriz. Many Iranians still revere Baskerville as an exemplar of an America that they saw as a welcome ally and a useful "third force" that might break the power of London and Saint Petersburg in Tehran. Howard Baskerville in a world moving toward darkness lit a candle. Many times the candle flickered by cruel winds but the flame regained steadiness.
As Rumi said, ″each one of us touches one place and the whole world understands you.″ Howard Baskerville came to TOUCH Tabriz. His tombstone seeming to have risen out of the earth is there since 1909, a year over a hundred years AND NOW THE WHOLE WORLD UNDERESTANDS him.
May the bell toll in towers or ring in the hand of every child in early spring of every year on April 19, and may Howard Baskerville hear the earthly chimes for the first time a century after his departure from earth – wherever he is in heaven
